Changes in the municipal landscape
Sant Feliu City Council has today published the conclusions of a municipal image survey carried out by GESOP. According to this report, Iniciativa would continue to be the winning party in the next municipal elections, while ERC would gain considerable presence. On the other hand, the PSC would be the party that would lose more councillors, although PP and CiU would also have one less. Citizens and PODEMOS would also form part of the municipal council. The survey, carried out by the Office of Social Studies and Public Opinion (GESOP) during the month of June, had the participation of 800 people registered in Sant Feliu.
A municipal panorama instead
According to this survey, if the municipal elections were held today, ICV-EUiA would continue to be the winning party in Sant Feliu, with a representation similar to that of the 2011 elections, with between 6 and 7 councilors. The main innovation is the strong entry of ERC in the City Council, with a representation of between 3 and 4 councillors. The PSC would also have a representation similar to that of the ERC, with between 3 and 4 councilors. On the other hand, the socialists would be the ones who would see their representation decrease the most.
According to the survey, CiU and the PP would lose one councilor each, leaving each party with 3 councilors. Ciutadans would get between 1 and 2 councillors, while PODEMOS would break into the political scene of Sant Feliu with one councillor.
Therefore, the trend of vote fragmentation that was already noted with the results of the European elections of May 25 is confirmed. If the predictions of this survey are fulfilled, the next term will be made up of a council with three more political forces than at present, where there are ICV-EUiA, CiU, PP and PSC.
A little-known government pact
This survey highlights the need to rethink government formulas, taking into account the diversification of political forces. Regarding the governance pact between ICV-EUiA and CiU, only one in four respondents is aware of it, 23%. On the other hand, 32% only cite the ecosocialist training. In addition, one in four people surveyed does not know which parties lead the municipal government.
It should be noted that the government pact between ICV-EUiA and CiU generates divided opinions among citizens. 40% see this agreement with good eyes, while 36.3% do not. It is important to note that the majority of CiU and ICV-EUiA voters positively value the pact between both formations, but a third of ecosocialist voters are critical.
The people of Sant Feliu want to vote, but they don’t want independence
The survey also dedicates a political section to the 9N consultation and concludes that the majority of the population of Sant Feliu wants to have the opportunity to vote, with 66% in favor. However, opinions on the future of Catalonia are divided. Supporters of the 9N consultation outnumber opponents in all population segments analysed, although they predominate among young people, residents of district 1 (centre) and those with more education. However, one in four respondents disagree with holding the consultation.
Regarding the intention to vote in the consultation, almost 4 out of 10 interviewees (38%) would vote in favor of the first question: ‘Do you want Catalonia to become a State?’. Instead, 3 out of 10 would opt for ‘No’. Regarding the second question: ‘Do you want this State to be independent?’, of those who answered ‘Yes’ to the first question, 84% would also vote ‘Yes’. Therefore, 32% of those interviewed would vote in favor of independence, while 36% reject it.
Political leaders and the assessment of the mayor
The mayor of Sant Feliu, Jordi San José, gets an average score of 6.1 from the public. On the other hand, the head of the list of CiU, Rosa Maria Martí, has obtained a grade of 5.6, while the spokesperson of the PSC, Lourdes Borrell, also approves with a 5.1.
According to the survey, the mayor gets the highest marks among the elderly, those with a lower level of education and residents of district 5 (Can Calders and Santa Creu streets). The lowest ratings are given in the districts of La Salut, Les Grasses and Can Calders.
