A period of restlessness in the Royal House
For almost half a year, the Spanish monarchy has been in a state of turmoil following Jaime del Burgo’s statements about Queen Letizia. These accusations of alleged infidelities towards King Felipe VI have generated a great shock in public opinion.
However, these revelations are not the only factor that has generated tensions in the monarchy, since the book ‘Letizia and I’ by Jaime Peñafiel has also contributed to increasing pressure on the institution.
New revelations and additional tensions
The tensions around the monarchy and Queen Letizia do not stop here. Del Burgo is preparing a documentary series about his relationship with Letizia and other aspects linked to the crown. For his part, Peñafiel has just published a new book titled ‘The Silences of Letizia’, in which he once again addresses the figure of her consort.
In this new book, Peñafiel compares Letizia to ‘a tree with a hard bark and abundant sap after everything she has had to live through, dragging betrayals, infidelities and adulteries, and everything has broken in her world.’ Furthermore, he describes her as a woman ‘who to everyone has always seemed cold, indestructible and decisive, always with her head held high’, but who currently appears ‘insecure and fragile’.
Likewise, Peñafiel describes Letizia as a person with a ‘passive aggressive’ profile. According to the author, the silence that she maintains regarding Jaime del Burgo’s revelations is ‘a silence that surrounds her and that may help her reflect on the acts she has committed in the past.’
Tests and challenges in the relationship
In his book, Peñafiel also addresses the initial relationship between Felipe and Letizia. He refers to how Letizia tested Felipe before breaking up with the rest of her lovers, evidencing a strategy to ensure the strength of her relationship with the king.
The author describes scenes in which Letizia puts Felipe on the ropes, showing herself to be ‘bossy and manipulative’. Additionally, he reveals details about Letizia’s life before meeting Felipe, including her parents’ separation and his impact on her.
