How to enjoy wine in public

Proper behavior with wine at social events, such as dinners with friends or gatherings, is an art that combines good manners, respect for others, and appreciation for the drink. In the following video, sommelier Carla Viladric, wine expert at El Celler de La Gourmeteria, gives us some guidelines to enjoy wine correctly in public. Follow these recommendations and surprise everyone with your knowledge and elegance at meetings, meetings with friends or any social event.

Wine selection and service

The first thing is to choose the right wine. If you are the host, consider your guests’ preferences and the menu. If you are a guest, respect the host’s choice. If you are asked to bring wine, a good option is to bring a bottle of red or white wine that goes well with different types of food. When it comes to serving wine, avoid filling the glass too much. Usually, it is filled up to a third or half of the glass to allow the wine to breathe and its aromas to be appreciated.

Handling of the cup

The way we hold the cup and the movements we make are key. Hold the glass by the stem or base to avoid heating the wine with hand temperature and allow for better visual appreciation. By gently shaking the wine in the glass, we help release its aromas. This is achieved with a light circular movement.

The tasting

The best part is always tasting the wine, which involves smelling and tasting it. Before drinking, bring the glass to your nose and inhale to appreciate the aromas. This is part of the wine tasting experience. Then, take a small sip and allow the wine to coat your entire tongue to appreciate its flavor and texture. There is no need to make noises when drinking, just enjoy it discreetly.

Table etiquette

The most important thing is to participate in conversations and listen to others. Wine is often an excellent complement to the conversation, but it should not be the center of attention. Avoid monopolizing the conversation by talking only about wine, unless it is a topic of common interest. When toasting, keep eye contact with the people you toast and smile. Don’t raise your glass too high or clink other people’s glasses too hard. And, of course, drink in moderation to maintain control and enjoy the event without causing discomfort to others. Know your limits and drink water between drinks as a good practice.
