Growth of the European automobile market

During the month of April 2024, the European automobile market experienced notable growth, with a total of 1,080,517 units sold. This represents an increase of 12.6% compared to the same period last year. This increase reflects interesting changes in the preferences of European consumers.

Increase in the registration of new cars

In the accumulated of the year, between January and April, 4,461,734 new cars have been registered in Europe, which represents an increase of 6.7% compared to 2023. Although the general growth is positive, some segments of the market have shown a slower evolution.

Changes in consumer preferences

Battery electric cars have seen slower growth, increasing their market share by just 0.3 percentage points, reaching 13.4% in April. This indicates that the growth of fully electric cars has slowed in recent times.

SUV-type vehicles remain popular

Despite the slowdown in growth, SUV-type vehicles remain popular, accounting for approximately half of total registrations. However, its market share has decreased slightly to 51.1%, with a year-on-year growth of 12%.

The best-selling cars in Europe

In April, the Dacia Sandero established itself as the best-selling car in Europe, with 25,803 units sold. This model stands out for its quality-price ratio and reliability. On the other hand, the Volkswagen Golf has recovered ground and reached second position with 22,080 units sold. Although it belongs to a different segment to the Dacia Sandero, it remains the most popular compact among Europeans, thanks to its iconic design, advanced technology and performance.

In third place is the Renault Clio, with 19,747 units sold. This French utility vehicle has gained popularity after its recent update, which has improved its design and equipment. The Volkswagen T-Roc is positioned as the best-selling SUV, with 19,475 units, demonstrating the preference for this type of vehicle despite the slight drop in its market share.

Other popular models in Europe include the Peugeot 208 and the Toyota Yaris, with 17,704 and 17,512 units sold respectively. These models are recognized for their reliability and versatility in the small car segment.

The Skoda Octavia remains firmly in the ranking with 17,171 units sold, followed by the Citroën C3 with 15,126 units. The Ford Puma and the Toyota Yaris Cross close the top 10 with 14,868 and 14,157 units respectively, being popular options in the compact SUV segment.
