Aim to reduce deaths on European roads
The body responsible for safety on Spanish roads is the General Directorate of Traffic, but the European Union has expressed its intention to have more influence in this area within the member states.
The European Union has set a target of reducing driver deaths on European roads to zero by 2050, although accidents remain frequent despite a decrease in deaths in recent years.
Modifications in the renewal of the driver’s license
The European Parliament approved a reform that includes various changes related to the renewal of driving licenses in member states, including the extension of the renewal period to 15 years instead of the current 10.
According to the new proposals, the driver’s license will be renewed every 15 years instead of the current 10, and it is also proposed that 17-year-olds can choose to get their driver’s license on the condition that they are always accompanied by an adult over the age of 25 until the age of 18.
Self-determination of drivers when renewing their license
The European Union advocates that drivers decide when they are no longer fit to drive, emphasizing individual responsibility rather than following state or European guidelines.
