A series that captivates everyone
The life of Máxima Zorreguieta, the queen consort of the Netherlands, has been brought to television in a series that is causing a sensation. The program, simply titled ‘Máxima’, premiered on June 19 on Antena 3 and consists of six episodes of 50 minutes each. Inspired by the biography written by Dutch journalist Marcia Luyten, ‘Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland’, the series immerses us in the fascinating life of the queen born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who conquered the hearts of the Netherlands.
Complex family relationships and personal tragedies
Before becoming queen, Máxima Zorreguieta (53) was a talented economist with a past full of nuances. Of Basque and Italian descent, Máxima received an education in the best schools in Buenos Aires and graduated in Economics from the Argentine Catholic University (UCA). Before her marriage to William Alexander of the Netherlands, Máxima had a successful career in the financial world. She worked in the Sales Department of Boston Securities in Buenos Aires and then moved to New York, where she held senior positions at HSBC and Deutsche Bank.
However, her life was not always a fairy tale. Her father, Jorge Zorreguieta, was Secretary of Agriculture during the dictatorship of General Jorge Videla, which generated great controversy when Máxima joined the Dutch Royal Family. Her father’s involvement in the dictatorship was so problematic that she was banned from attending the royal wedding.
The series also addresses the personal tragedies that Máxima has faced. The death of her sister Inés de ella in 2018, at age 33, was a devastating blow. Ines, who struggled with anorexia and other mental health issues, was unable to find happiness and succumbed to her inner demons. Since then, Máxima from Holland has worked tirelessly to promote mental health among young people, turning her pain into a life mission.
The meeting in Seville: Máxima and Guillermo Alejandro meet
Fate played an important role when Máxima met the then Prince William Alexander of the Netherlands at the April Fair in Seville in 1999. Who would have imagined that Máxima would be dancing sevillanas and winning the heart of a Dutch prince? It’s like a soap opera! But don’t think it was an instant fairy tale. Apparently, Máxima played hard to get at first. Strategy or genuine disinterest? The series will reveal all the details to us!
After a proposal worthy of a winter’s tale, complete with ring and ice skates, the couple sealed their union on February 2, 2002 at the New Church in Amsterdam. Since then, the fairy tale has become reality: in 2013, William Alexander became king and Maxima his queen consort. Their love has borne fruit in the form of three princesses: Amalia, Alexia and Ariane. And against all odds, this Argentine has conquered not only the heart of her prince, but also that of an entire country.
A series that promises to captivate
The production ‘Máxima’, which is also available on Atresplayer, aspires to become the successor to ‘The Crown’, awakening interest in royal sagas in the world of streaming. With a cast led by Argentine actress Delfina Chaves and Dutch actor Martijn Lakemeier, the series promises to continue exploring the fascinating life of the queen in its second season, which is scheduled to film in October.
