Intelligent Connectivity in the Catalan Regions

The Internet of Things Open Network (XOIC) has spread across the Catalan territory to connect sensors and actuators for a wide range of uses. In recent years, it has expanded beyond metropolitan areas, reaching several counties. This deployment has been particularly notable in support of councils, as is the case of Alcover.

Innovative Services for Data Management

In addition to connectivity, the XOIC offers complementary services for the processing, storage and exploitation of data through free software. This initiative has allowed Alcover City Council to promote Smart Cities and the Internet of Things through an open, public and anonymous network, in collaboration with the integral cooperative of workers and users femProcomuns SCCL and its activity group XOIC.

IoT infrastructure at the Service of the Community

This initiative allows the city council to self-supply IoT infrastructure for its own services, in addition to making it available to all residents and those interested in making use of it. This open infrastructure is based on licenses for the use of TTN (TheThingsNetwork) and LoRaWAN technology, which offers a coverage of the order of kilometers and very low consumption devices.

Practical Applications of Technology

LoRaWAN technology is suitable for sensors and other devices with very low speed and low criticality requirements, such as consumption meters, environmental sensors, vehicle tracking and cloud connection of operating systems. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more connected and efficient society in Catalonia.
