A delicate situation
Despite efforts to maintain a public image of vigor and vitality, the private reality of King Emeritus Juan Carlos I reveals a delicate situation. Complications from a severely damaged hip from a skiing accident and a poorly executed operation have severely limited his mobility. He now relies on a wheelchair to get around, facing intense pain that makes even the most basic of daily activities difficult.
A noticeable deterioration
All of this has meant that the health of King Emeritus Juan Carlos I, at 86 years old, has suffered a notable deterioration, reflecting the ravages of time on his mobility. Recently, it has been observed that his efforts to stay upright are becoming more limited. These conditions have left him practically immobilized and suffering constant pain, a reality that contrasts with his previous image of vigor and activity.
Adaptations and care
Juan Carlos I already had to adapt his residences in Zarzuela and Abu Dhabi to accommodate his new needs, with ramps and other facilities that facilitate his mobility. In addition, he spends a lot of time in Geneva, where he stays at the Four Roses hotel, enjoying amenities that make his daily life easier. He also has the constant support of a team of caregivers 24 hours a day, who assist with all his activities and basic needs. Despite his deteriorating state of health, Juan Carlos I maintains an exercise routine supervised by specialists, in an effort to preserve his mobility and quality of life.
Family concern
Concern for the health of the emeritus king is not limited to the family sphere. It has generated great concern among those close to him, including his daughters, the infantas Elena and Cristina, as well as King Felipe VI. However, it is Elena who has shown particular dedication to her father. Despite Juan Carlos I’s questionable behaviors, Elena has always been present and willing to take care of him. Her concern has intensified as her father’s health deteriorates, and she strives to spend as much time as possible at his side in this final stage of her life.
