Volkswagen’s commitment to electrification
Volkswagen has stood out as one of the pioneering brands in the commitment to completely electric models. Unlike other manufacturers, the German brand has not only decided to venture into this type of vehicles, but has done so through its own family within its catalogue, the ID family.
The ID family models feature a unique design language, clearly differentiated from the rest of the Volkswagen range. These vehicles are intended to play a fundamental role in the German brand’s strategy, despite the fact that their penetration in most of the markets in which they operate has not reached initial expectations.
Challenges in the transition towards electrification
Although some Volkswagen combustion models have achieved a strong position in the market, the vast majority of sales in Europe continue to be of vehicles with combustion engines. This has led the German company to maintain its commitment to combustion models, despite its expansion into the electric vehicle segment.
The brand has made the decision to change the name of its sports variants of electric vehicles, abandoning the GTX acronym in favor of the classic GTI acronym. In addition, the sporty versions of electric vehicles will be divided into two categories: the GTI versions, with a more powerful electric motor than the standard versions, and the R versions, equipped with four-wheel drive thanks to two electric motors.
The future of electrification at Volkswagen
The next electric model that will carry the GTX initials will be the sports ID.Buzz, thus marking the end of a brief stage in the German brand’s nomenclature.
