BMW and its M badge: what does its logo hide?

BMW’s sportiest models

You don’t have to be a big connoisseur of the motor industry or a car enthusiast to appreciate very well that the sportiest models of BMW, one of the most prestigious and most recognized luxury brands in the world, always carry, regardless of the model that whatever body type it is, the nickname M, which is nothing more than the badge to separate them from the less sporty models.

It should be noted that this strategy of differentiating its sportier models from more normal models is not exclusive to BMW since, for example, in Mercedes we can find the same with its AMG letters or, in the case of Audi, the from RS, among many other brands.

In this sense, those who have or intend to buy one of BMW’s M versions are well aware that these versions are not only more sporty in terms of their aesthetic appearance, but also have in their engines one of their best selling points , thus becoming models in the vast majority of cases very interesting in terms of their benefits, although obviously they are not exactly economical.

The origin of the colors of the BMW M logo

What many probably do not know is the origin of the M logo on BMW cars, a logo that is characterized by the letter M itself as well as by three very characteristic colors: blue, purple and red.

Although it is true that the manufacturer has never explained the origin of this logo or the interpretation that should be made of these colors, there are some theories that have not been rejected by the manufacturer itself.

One of them is the one that talks about the symbolism of the colors, being the color blue the color of BMW, the color red the color of passion for racing and the color purple the mixture of the two colors thus associating the long history that it has BMW with the world of motoring and racing.

In any case, what seems clear, and especially knowing the latest news coming from some of the most important voices of the brand, is that the M versions of BMW will soon say goodbye to manual transmissions, a type of change that it has always been very characteristic of this type of model but is becoming less common in the industry. What will not change, at least for now, will be its characteristic logo.
