The role of Junts per Catalunya in the European institutions
Diana Riba, ERC candidate for the European elections on June 9, has a different vision about the role that Junts per Catalunya has had in the European institutions in the last five years. According to Riba, the party led by Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín has had a much smaller impact than what they wanted to convey. At the informative breakfast of the Nueva Economia Forum in Madrid, Riba highlighted that the ability to influence is determined by the role of MEPs in parliamentary groups. While ERC and Ahora Repúblicas are in relevant parliamentary groups, Junts per Catalunya is not in any group and has not had such an intense legislative task.
The law of clarity and the right to self-determination
Riba has regretted that Junts per Catalunya has not participated in the work to draft a law of clarity that seeks to achieve a common European law for the right to self-determination. This is one of ERC’s main proposals in its electoral program for the European elections. However, Riba has made it clear that all the exiles have appeared before justice and he does not share the idea that they were on vacation in exile.
The importance of the amnesty law
Riba has highlighted that the amnesty law is a great milestone, but it does not mark the end of the independence process. Although he celebrates that the PSOE has approved the law, Riba insists that defending the right to self-determination in Europe is not impossible and that they will continue working in this direction.
Diana Riba’s commitment
Diana Riba was introduced by Ernest Maragall and recalled that her entry into politics was motivated by the repression suffered by her husband, Raül Romeva, as a member of the 1-O Government. Riba has reaffirmed her commitment to defending the right to self-determination and has highlighted the importance of listening to the will of citizens.
