The Demand for Financing Negotiation of Catalonia
The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has raised the need for a bilateral negotiation on financing for Catalonia, conditioning ERC’s support to the Spanish government. Aragonès has expressed that any future agreement with the PSOE is subject to a change of attitude on the part of the socialists, who quickly rejected the singular financing proposal presented by the Department of Economy.
Pressures and Confidence of the Catalan Government
Despite the denials received from Ferraz and Moncloa, the Catalan government remains firm in trusting in using financing as a tool of pressure against the PSC. The vice president of the Generalitat, Laura Vilagrà, has stressed the importance of complying with previous agreements to maintain the support of ERC.
Firm CKD Posture and Increased Tension
Both Aragonès and ERC are determined to make their votes count and ensure compliance with the agreements with the Pedro Sánchez government. Republicans are angry about the differential treatment between parties and are willing to raise the tone of their demands.
Response from the Moncloa and Criticism of the Government
The Spanish government has responded to pressure from the Generalitat by criticizing the Government’s management and accusing it of problems in public services. The Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, has defended the current level of resources in Catalonia and has pointed out the need for consensus for a new regional financing model.
