A new 2 euro coin to honor the Spanish National Police
A new 2 euro coin is already in circulation in Spain. It is a commemorative coin, legal tender, and which serves to honor the 200 years of life of the Spanish National Police. This police force becomes, as of today, the first in Spain to have a legal tender currency. It is an official piece, of those that each state can make every year to pay tribute to some place, character or institution of the country.
Features of the new currency
The new 2 euro coin has been minted by the National Mint and Stamp Factory. On its face, the official coat of arms of the Spanish National Police Corps appears, with a circular legend that reads “POLICIA NACIONAL 1824-2024”. At the bottom of the emblem, the name “ESPAÑA” is written in capitals, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union. On the common side, the coin has the same characteristics as the other two-euro coins issued by Spain and the rest of the eurozone countries.
The popularity of commemorative coins
Spain, as a member of the Eurozone, has the possibility to make a pair of 2 euro commemorative coins every year. These coins enter circulation and have the same value as other two-euro coins. Commemorative coins are highly sought after by collectors across Europe, who are willing to pay large sums of money to own them. In Spain, commemorative coins have been issued to celebrate various events and places of interest, such as the 4th centenary of the first edition of Don Quixote, the entrance of the Prefecture of the State, the 50th anniversary of the birth of King Felipe VI, the 5th centenary of the first round the world captained by Juan Sebastián Elcano and the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The birth of the Spanish National Police
The Spanish National Police was created in 1824 by the Royal Charter of King Ferdinand VII. This police force was established to provide Spanish cities with a modern security structure. Over time, the National Police has evolved to become the civilian police force we know today. This new 2 euro coin commemorates the 200 years of existence of this institution.
The new 2 euro coin dedicated to the Spanish National Police has been in circulation since March 12, 2024. It is a unique piece that pays tribute to this police force and can be used in any economic transaction in the countries of the area euro
