The Catalan business fabric: a diverse and evolving reality

A business landscape in transformation

Recently, Pimec celebrated obtaining a seat in the state social dialogue, representing small and medium-sized Catalan companies. This new representation is a significant step in the diversification of the business actors involved in decision-making at the state level.

The president of the Catalan employers’ association, Antoni Cañete, has expressed the importance of this presence, pointing out that before, the representation monopolized by the CEOE, prioritized large companies to the detriment of SMEs. This situation has had repercussions in the Catalan business fabric, contributing to a smaller size of small and medium-sized companies compared to other European regions.

The diversity of the Catalan business fabric is a source of wealth, although it also poses challenges. Small businesses are nimble and have a significant impact on the local economy, but a lack of support and tax incentives for growth can limit their opportunities for development.

The role of family businesses

Family businesses represent 88% of the Catalan business fabric. Despite their importance, they often encounter challenges in the generational succession and the professionalization of management. This situation can limit the growth potential of these companies, affecting their ability to innovate and adapt to market changes.

The resolution of these challenges is crucial for the future of the Catalan business fabric. Improving the conditions for the growth of small and medium-sized companies, as well as support for the professionalization of family businesses, are key elements for a positive evolution of the business landscape in Catalonia.
