The Catalan peasantry, between protest and innovation

The crisis in the agricultural and livestock sector

In recent years, Catalan farmers and ranchers have experienced a situation of discouragement and indignation at the difficulties their sector is suffering. The low prices they receive for their products, unfair competition from imports, excessive bureaucracy, the lack of generational relief and climate change are some of the factors that have caused a deep crisis in the rural world.

This crisis has led to several mobilizations and protests by farmers and ranchers, who have demanded urgent measures from the public administrations. One of the most outstanding was the demonstration on February 6, 2024, which brought together thousands of people and agricultural vehicles in Barcelona, in a historic day of vindication.

The Catalan peasantry, different from that of the State

The Catalan peasantry, however, has not followed the same path as that of the rest of the State, which has been organized under the Platform 6F, an entity that has politicized the conflict and has had the support of the extreme right . Catalan farmers and ranchers have preferred to maintain their autonomy and identity, and have rejected any alliance with political forces that do not respect diversity and democracy.

In addition, Catalan farming has demonstrated a greater capacity for adaptation and innovation than that of the State, and has opted for more sustainable, ecological and local production models. It has also played an important role in the defense of the environment and the fight against climate change, and has incorporated the gender perspective and the participation of women in the sector.

Catalan farming, a key sector for the country

Catalan farming, despite its difficulties, is a strategic sector for the economic, social and cultural development of the country. Its role is essential to guarantee food security, the preservation of the landscape, biodiversity and heritage, and territorial cohesion. In addition, it is a sector that generates employment, wealth and innovation, and that contributes to the identity and sovereignty of Catalonia.

For this reason, the Catalan peasantry deserves the recognition and support of the whole of society, and especially of the public institutions, which must look after their needs and demands. Catalan farming is a lively, dynamic and diverse sector, which has a lot to offer and is part of the country’s history and future.
