A Call to Justice and Dignity
On a vibrant May Day, thousands of people took to the streets of Spain to defend their labor and social rights. The majority unions, General Union of Workers (UGT) and Workers’ Commissions (CCOO), led the protests, demanding fairer working conditions, decent wages and a strengthening of public services.
Employment as a Priority
Employment was a central issue in union demands. Unai Sordo, general secretary of CCOO, emphasized the need to aim for full employment, arguing that it is essential for a prosperous and fair society.
Unions also highlighted the importance of living wages to enable families to cope with increasing economic pressures such as inflation and the high cost of housing.
The Importance of Care
Care was another crucial aspect in union demands. Unai Sordo advocated for care to be a fundamental part of the Welfare State, recognizing its vital role in society.
Protesters also expressed concern about job insecurity in the care sector, where workers often face difficult conditions and low wages.
The Defense of Public Services
Public services were a central issue in the protests. The unions denounced the deterioration of public services in recent years and demanded investments in health, education and pensions.
Protesters highlighted the importance of accessible and quality public services for all citizens, regardless of their economic or social situation.
A Commitment to Democracy
In addition to labor and social demands, the unions also called for the defense of democracy. Pepe Álvarez, general secretary of UGT, stressed that democracy is essential to guarantee the rights and labor progress of workers.
Protesters denounced attempts to undermine democracy and expressed their determination to protect democratic values and the rule of law.
An International Perspective
Unions also showed their solidarity with workers around the world. They denounced the Israeli occupation of Palestine and demanded an end to the war in Ukraine.
Protesters expressed concern about trade unionists being persecuted and killed in several countries and advocated for labor rights and freedom of association around the world.
Workers’ Voices
Rosa, a nurse, shared her experience of working in inhumane conditions with 65 patients a day. She highlighted the importance of improving working conditions and salaries in the healthcare sector.
Belén, a female railroad worker, spoke of her commitment to gender equality and the need to break the glass ceiling in traditionally masculine work environments.
Santi, a young systems technician, expressed his concern about the high cost of housing and the job insecurity that many young people face.
Lourdes, a retiree, emphasized the importance of investing in the elderly and ensuring their well-being in old age.
África and Manuel, a couple of workers, highlighted the need to defend the rights won through years of struggle and the importance of transmitting these values to younger generations.
A Call to Action
Unions and protesters called for collective action to address the challenges facing workers and society as a whole.
They demanded policies that promote employment, improve working conditions, strengthen public services and defend democracy.
May Day 2023 was a powerful testimony to the spirit of struggle and solidarity of Spanish workers. His message resonated in the streets and served as a reminder of the importance of working together to build a more just and prosperous future for all.
