The two wooden boats, which were found in 2012, will be restored and exhibited at the Port Museum

The Port of Tarragona has started the restoration process of two old wooden boats that were used in port activity between the 17th and 18th centuries. The remains of these ships, which were discovered in 2012 during the works to remove the train crossing from the Plaça dels Carros in the city, are a unique witness to Tarragona’s maritime history.

A specialized treatment

The two boats, named 1 and 500, were transferred to the Center for Underwater Archeology of Catalonia, in Girona, to receive the necessary conservation treatments. These ships will return to Tarragona for their final restoration and assembly, as the Port took their find into account when designing the new Port Museum and its museum project, which was completed in 2021.

A permanent exhibition

The two boats will be permanently located in the central part of the Museum’s route, on a two-level platform so that the public visiting the Museum can see them in full. The Port of Tarragona hopes that during the last quarter of 2024 the boats can be definitively displayed at the Tarragona Port Museum.

The project, awarded to Rehatec Obres i Restauracions S.A.U.

The restoration project for the two boats has been awarded to the company Rehatec Obres i Restauracions S.A.U., a company created in 2001 specializing in various types of restoration. The project has a budget of 100,988 euros (without VAT) and an expected term of 8 months.
