The educational union USTEC·STEs denounces the increase in attacks on teachers
The educational union USTEC·STEs (IAC) has warned about the increase in attacks on teachers by students. According to a survey carried out by the union, two out of three teachers have been victims of assault. This survey has been answered by 11,000 teachers, and highlights the worrying situation experienced by many teaching professionals.
Lack of clear protocols and guidelines
USTEC regrets the lack of clear protocols and guidelines on the part of the administration to deal with this problem. According to the union, there is no protocol or application to record the assaults, nor clear guidelines on how to act in these situations. This means that many teachers are helpless and do not know their rights and the steps to follow.
Attacks increasingly common
According to USTEC, scenes of aggression, insults and threats are becoming more frequent and are becoming normalized. The survey carried out by the union reveals that 63.76% of teachers have received some form of aggression from students. Of these assaults, 14.20% were physical, 46.47% verbal and 3.34% caused damage to objects. In addition, 29.77% of teachers claim to have received assaults from students’ families.
Ignorance of rights and lack of support
Despite the increase in assaults, many teachers do not know their rights and the steps to follow in these cases. USTEC denounces the lack of support from the administration and the lack of knowledge about the Health Committees and other bodies for monitoring and preventing occupational risks. This means that there are no clear figures that allow this problem to be accurately measured.
Campaign to make the problem visible
Faced with this situation, USTEC has launched a campaign to give visibility to this problem and demand solutions from the Administration. The aim of the campaign is to propose clear instructions for the people affected and to establish a record of all assaults. In addition, the creation of an action protocol is called for so that teachers know how to act in the face of aggressive behavior.
The importance of education in values
USTEC emphasizes the importance of values education and the need to protect the psycho-emotional well-being and safety of teaching professionals. Despite recognizing that some aggressive behaviors may have a background of mental health or emotional problems of the students, the union insists on the importance of acting against these behaviors to protect the people affected and because it is the most educational thing that can be done.
