Dincat promotes cognitive accessibility on St George’s Day

Dincat, representative of the intellectual disability sector in Catalonia, has highlighted the importance of promoting cognitive accessibility on the occasion of Sant Jordi’s Day. The aim is to adapt books and texts so that everyone can understand them and enjoy a more inclusive day. In a statement, the collective has called on publishers to publish more books adapted for easy reading. Currently, these books only represent 0.45% of the total of public libraries in Catalonia (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).

The lack of cognitive accessibility affects the right to culture and information

Dincat criticizes that many people see their right to culture and information violated due to the lack of cognitive accessibility. According to the Easy Reading Association, 30% of the population has reading comprehension problems and could benefit from this type of adapted books and texts (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en -Catalan/).

The lack of current publications in easy reading for people with intellectual disabilities

Another problem pointed out by Dincat is the lack of current publications in easy reading for people with intellectual disabilities. Many times, these people are forced to read children’s books or stories or classics of literature. Dincat emphasizes that adults with intellectual disabilities also want to enjoy topical novels in accordance with their age.

Promotion of easy reading clubs for language learning and practice

Dincat is betting on the promotion of more easy reading clubs as a tool for learning and practicing the language. Currently, in Catalonia there are 179 easy reading clubs, of which 34 are specialized in people with intellectual disabilities.
