Investigation and follow-up of the aufranys at the Fígols landfill

The Regional Council of Pallars Jussà has been collaborating in an innovative research project focused on the carrion birds that gather at the dump located in Fígols, in the municipality of Tremp. This area, which is under the management of the county body, is the main habitat of a population of these birds, which spend the summer season in this environment.

Participation of different entities in the study

This research initiative, led by experts from the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología and the Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos (IREC, CSIC-UCLM), has the collaboration of the Government of Aragon, the University of Lleida and the Government of Catalonia. The main objective is to collect relevant information about scavengers in order to better understand their population and behavioral dynamics.

Study methodology and data evaluation

The research involves capturing specimens to carry out their ringing and equipping them with satellite transmitters that allow detailed monitoring of their movements. The data collected provides a precise insight into the habits of these birds, including information on feeding areas, resting areas and their seasonal movements.

In addition, the data obtained have revealed that many of these scavengers who live in Fígols migrate to Mauritania during the winter season. The researchers also carry out biological sampling to assess the health of the animals and identify the possible presence of pollutants in their population.

Implications and relevant findings

This study provides a unique perspective on the ecology and behavior of scavengers at the Fígols landfill, opening the door to future research and conservation actions to protect these species essential for ecosystem balance. The data collected are essential to better understand the interaction between these birds and their environment, and to promote sustainable management measures.
