Agreements to Mitigate Drought

The drought affecting Catalonia has tested governments, leading the Generalitat of Catalonia and the government of the Spanish State to take joint measures. The possibility of transporting water by boat from the Sagunto desalination plant in case of extreme need in Catalonia has been agreed. This agreement has been ratified by the third vice president of the Spanish government and minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, during a Europa Press informative lunch. Ribera highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Spanish and Catalan administrations to be prepared for the possibility of transferring water by boat from the Sagunto desalination plant, in the Valencian Country.

Coordination Against Drought

The Spanish Minister Teresa Ribera has highlighted the good coordination between the Spanish State and the Generalitat in the face of the challenge of the serious drought facing Catalonia. She emphasized the need for a solid hydraulic policy in Catalonia, recognizing the crucial importance of this situation.

Possibility of Lifting the Emergency

The Minister of Climate Action, David Mascort, has indicated that the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia could consider lifting the drought emergency if the reserves in the internal basins reach 27% or 28% of their capacity. This decision would be conditional on the forecast of rain and the recovery of reserves in the internal basins.

Current Situation of Reserves

Currently, the reservoirs in the internal basins of Catalonia are below 17% of their capacity, despite the recent Easter rains that have had an impact throughout the Catalan territory.
