The reality of gender violence
According to a recently published Center for Opinion Studies (CEO) survey, women continue to live with fear and insecurity in today’s society. 77% of women fear being robbed and 75% fear being assaulted. In addition, 71% of women express fear of being victims of sexual violence. These figures are alarming and highlight the need to take measures to address this problem.
Gender inequality in different areas
Gender inequality manifests itself in different areas of everyday life. Women face limitations and restrictions that affect their freedom and autonomy. These limitations are reflected in the constant fear that women suffer in public environments, such as public transport, where sexual assaults have increased by 44% in Catalonia over the past year. In addition, women also face invisibility in many areas of society and the lack of female references in sectors such as science, technology, business and sports.
Advances in the feminist struggle
Despite persistent challenges and inequalities, the feminist struggle has achieved some important advances. Last year, laws were passed and measures were taken to promote gender equality, such as the parity law requiring 40% women in institutional bodies. There have also been changes in the field of sport, with the success of female athletes and the visibility of their exploits. However, much remains to be done to achieve a fully egalitarian society.
The need for profound changes
To address gender-based violence and persistent inequalities, it is necessary to make profound changes in society. In addition to changes in legislation, a cultural and educational transformation that questions established gender norms is essential. It is the responsibility of all of society to work together to guarantee safety and equality for everyone.
