Reduction of the wild boar population due to the drought

The decrease in food and access to water due to the drought has caused a significant reduction of 50% in the wild boar overpopulation in the Alt Empordà. This situation has led to a decrease in damage to farmers and traffic accidents related to these animals.

Current balance and progressive decline

Jaume Fàbrega, from the Girona Hunting Federation, highlights a remarkable reduction in the number of wild boars killed in the area, going from 570 three years ago to 200 today. Despite this decrease, wild boars are still considered a pest, although a certain balance has been achieved in the current situation.

Increase in hunters and population control

The proliferation of hunting bans and the reduction of cornfields have helped control wild boar overpopulation. However, hunters warn of the increase in other animals such as deer and roe deer, as well as traffic accidents caused by the latter.

Extension of the deer hunting period

To prevent problems similar to those of wild boars, the roe deer hunting period has been extended in Girona’s counties. This measure responds to the observed increase in the population of these animals, allowing their hunting until March 31 in all approved methods.
