The Llegim el rio program
Llegim el riu is a citizen science program that has been promoted by the Provincial Council of Barcelona with the aim of promoting knowledge of river ecosystems and promoting citizen collaboration in their protection. This program is now in its third edition and has been extended to the Besòs and Tordera basins.
The participation of municipalities
This year, the program extends to 12 municipalities in the area, including Barberà del Vallès, Bigues i Riells, Les Franqueses del Vallès, Malgrat de Mar, Martorelles, Montmeló, Montornès del Vallès, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Sant Celoni, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana and Tordera. Each of these municipalities has committed to work together within the framework of the program.
Local work teams
To be able to participate in this project, each municipality must form a local work team, which is composed of at least one person from the local library and another from the environment department of the city council. This guarantees the involvement of different areas in the program.
Citizen science actions
During the year, several actions will be carried out that will involve the public in the knowledge and conservation of river ecosystems. These actions will be carried out through the promotion of social innovation spaces created in the municipal libraries of the different participating municipalities.
The working method
The Llegim el riu program uses the working method of RiuNet, an interactive educational tool for the diagnosis of the hydrological and ecological state of a river. This tool is a form of citizen science as it allows participants to provide scientific data to the FEHM-Lab research group at the University of Barcelona. In addition, it has the collaboration of the Habitats association and the Rivus Foundation.
Co-creation and improvement of river ecosystems
The Llegim el riu program encourages co-creation between different actors such as citizens, libraries, town councils, universities and organizations. Through this process, improvement proposals are collected for rivers and their ecosystems, with the aim of protecting and conserving them in a sustainable way.
Presentation in Sant Celoni
The presentation of the Llegim el riu a Sant Celoni program will take place this Friday at the Slaughterhouse Library. During this citizen science information session, the project will be announced and interested adults will be invited to participate in an ecological research project in the Pertegàs creek.
With the Llegim el riu program, other citizen science and river knowledge projects that are already being led from the local world are complemented. This program is an opportunity for citizens to learn about and contribute to the protection of river ecosystems in the area.
