Employment discrimination in the LGTBI group

by PREMIUM.CAT

A study reveals a high level of discrimination in the workplace

According to a study prepared by the UGT union, between 2020 and 2023, 69% of LGBTI people suffered some type of discrimination, either physical or verbal, in their workplace. This figure rises to 78% in Spain. These data are worrying and show the need to take measures to guarantee the labor rights of the group.

Difficulties accessing the labor market for trans people

The study also highlights the difficulties faced by trans people when accessing the labor market. Many of them are forced to work in the shadow economy, which implies a situation of expulsion from the labor market. According to the analysis of the union in Catalonia, 55% of trans people are in this situation.

Waiver of rights in the family sphere

The study also highlights the difficulties faced by LGBTI people in the family sphere. Many times they have to give up rights such as accompanying medical visits or marriage. This situation is very worrying and highlights the need to guarantee full equality in all areas of life.

The importance of legislation and business measures

Since the approval of the trans and LGTBIQ+ law, there is article 15.1 which obliges companies with more than 50 workers to apply measures to achieve full equality. It is important that these measures are implemented to ensure that democracy reaches the workplace.

Study data

The study prepared by the UGT union obtained 3,400 responses in 2020 and 2,800 in 2023. It is expected that a new survey will be carried out in 2025 to update the situation.

Report of the Observatory Against LGTBIphobia

The Observatory Against LGTBIphobia has drawn up a report in the workplace between the years 2023 and 2024. A total of 23 incidents have been registered, with 43.5% of those affected identified as gay people, 21 .7% as lesbians and 8.7% as trans men and women. Harassment is the most common practice.

The agreement between the Observatory and the UGT union aims to support people who have suffered incidents of LGTBIphobia in the workplace, providing them with accompanying and support services.
