Transformation of sexual identities among young people

A recent joint study between Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and Toronto University reveals a significant change in how young people of Millennial generations and Z are sexually identified. As society progresses, younger and more young people move away from traditional labels, with a significant increase in bisexuality, especially among women.

Revealing data about bisexuality

The study, which has been conducted from two surveys to 4,000 young Catalans, shows that more than 25% of women in the Z generation are considered non -heterosexual, a percentage that is double that of millennials. In contrast, most men continue to identify themselves as heterosexuals, indicating a clear gender division in sexual identities.

The impact of gender on identities

Researchers, Maria Rodó-Zárate and Joel Cantó Roche, say that women show a significant tendency to challenge the traditional rules of sexuality, opting for more flexible and diverse identities. This evolution in the way they see themselves is a reflection of the social changes that occur around them.

La Political ideology with determining

Another fundamental aspect that emerges from the study is the influence of political ideology on sexual identities. Young people with more progressive political inclinations are more likely to be identified as LGB+, as opposed to those who identify as centrists or conservatives. This tendency is particularly evident among women, who identify with bisexuality and other forms of sexual diversity.

Significant differences between genres

Among men, heterosexuals tend to have less progressive political inclination, showing less representation of LGB+ people among conservatives. This emphasizes the need to understand the interaction between sexual identity and political context in the behavior of young people.

Beyond social acceptance

The authors of the study emphasize that increase in diverse sexual identification cannot be exclusively attributed to increasing social acceptance. In fact, the interaction between gender, ideology and generation is crucial in understanding this dynamic. Young women with left -wing ideologies, in particular, align their sexual identity with their political beliefs, including their feminist perspectives.

Reflections on the future of sexual identities

This research opens new avenues of exploration on how sexual identities evolve in a constant world. The results suggest that it is vital to integrate sexuality and gender identity into the study of political behavior, thus offering a deeper understanding of current and future social dynamics.
