A Persistent Problem in Our Society
Every year, November 25th reminds us of a painful reality: violence against women continues to be a scourge that affects our society in an alarming way. This day serves to highlight the seriousness of a problem that not only affects the victims, but also has repercussions on the entire community.
The Roots of Gender-Based Violence
Gender-based violence is not an isolated phenomenon, but arises from a patriarchal system that perpetuates inequality. This violence occurs in multiple forms and areas, affecting women of all ages and conditions. Relationships, the workplace, and even sports are areas where this violence manifests itself with worrying frequency.
Diversity in Manifestations of Violence
The forms of gender violence are varied: from physical and psychological aggression to economic and digital violence. Each of these manifestations is a reflection of the gender inequality that persists in our society.
Femicides: An Unacceptable Reality
In the current context, femicide is presented as the most extreme manifestation of gender-based violence. This year, we have mourned the loss of 26 women in the Catalan Countries, with 19 cases formally recognized. This figure is only the surface of a much deeper and more complex reality.
The Influence of Retrograde Movements
The growth of the far right worldwide, including in Europe and the United States, is a concern that we cannot ignore. Phenomena such as the ‘tradwife’ movement, which promotes a model of women being subordinate to the family unit, reflect a retrograde vision that can have serious repercussions on women’s rights.
The Time to Act
The data on gender-based violence call us to action. It is essential that society mobilizes to eradicate this violence, both at the individual and collective levels. The feminist struggle must become a political priority that puts women’s rights at the center of the public agenda.
November 25 is not just a day to remember, but a moment to reaffirm our commitment to the fight against gender-based violence and for equality. The responsibility lies with all of us to build a more just and safe future.
