Overcoming Adversity Through Adventure
At just 18, Zoe Walastyan from High Wycombe has not only faced the trials of scoliosis but has also transformed her life through the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award. After a significant back surgery that required her to relearn how to walk, Zoe embarked on an inspiring journey that tested her resilience and determination.
A Challenge Like No Other
Zoe’s journey began when she was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 11. A routine check-up revealed that her spine was not aligned, leading to further examinations that confirmed two curvatures. This diagnosis set off a challenging two-year period during which she wore a back brace continuously, but despite her efforts, her condition deteriorated.
Surgical Intervention and Transformation
In 2020, Zoe’s family sought advanced treatment in Germany, opting for a procedure known as vertebral body tethering. This innovative surgery involved placing six pins into her vertebrae rather than traditional rods, resulting in an immediate height increase of 6 cm. The aftermath was both physically and emotionally daunting, as she had to relearn how to walk.
Embracing the DofE Challenge
Determined to reclaim her confidence, Zoe decided to participate in the DofE Award shortly after her recovery. Starting with the bronze level, she engaged in various activities that included volunteering, physical challenges, and an expedition that involved hiking approximately 16 kilometers.
Building Confidence Through Experience
Zoe viewed the DofE as an opportunity to confront her fears and prove her strength. ‘I wanted to show myself that I could do it,’ she explained, highlighting the importance of personal growth. With each level she completed—bronze, silver, and gold—Zoe noticed a remarkable boost in her self-esteem and overall confidence.
The Impact of DofE on Zoe’s Life
Despite ongoing pain from her condition, Zoe has experienced a shift in her body image and emotional strength. She credits her participation in DofE for this transformation, stating, ‘It’s probably the hardest thing that I’ll ever physically do, so life can’t be much harder than that.’
A Bright Future Ahead
As Zoe prepares for her A-level exams, she has her sights set on pursuing a degree in accounting and finance. Her unwavering determination is evident in her desire to not let her condition define her. ‘I just don’t want my condition to stop me from being like everyone else,’ she remarked, embodying the spirit of perseverance.
Inspiring Others Through Her Story
Zoe Walastyan’s journey is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. Her story not only highlights the challenges faced by those with physical limitations but also serves as an inspiration for others to embrace their own journeys of resilience. As she continues to grow and thrive, Zoe stands as a beacon of hope and determination.
