Fast forward nearly six decades, and the club’s reunions have become a cherished tradition, with gatherings occurring every three years since their inaugural meeting in 1992. These events are a testament to the strong friendships that have blossomed within the club’s ranks, some resulting in marriages that have lasted over half a century.
From Competitors to Comrades
Pete ‘Fuzz’ Jordan, now 76, recalls the club’s competitive spirit, noting that during its prime, it became the largest tenpin bowling league in the UK, even clinching national championships from 1970 to 1972. Despite the passing years, the camaraderie remains, with members engaging in spirited matches against current university teams, albeit with a humorous acknowledgment of their declining bowling skills.
Honoring Memories and Celebrating Life
The recent reunion, held this month, attracted 42 members who gathered not only to reminisce but also to forge new memories. Activities included a delightful canal cruise that started with a jovial gathering at a local pub. This event honored the legacy of their late coach driver, Bert ‘The Bus’ Fiander, who remained a fixture at these gatherings until his 90s.
Rekindling Old Friendships
The reunion featured representatives from the club’s early years, including team captains and members of the successful 1970 inter-university team. Bowling on Sunday morning at Rotherham Superbowl saw participants averaging 75 years in age, proving that while physical abilities may wane, the spirit of competition and camaraderie remains vibrant.
