After more than a decade and a half since his death, the memory of Bishop Joan Carrera (1939-2008) continues to vibrate in the hearts and memories of all those who shared moments with him.

The presentation of the book Look at the lemon groves. Bishop Joan Carrera: Testimony of Faith, in the church of Sant Pau del Camp in Barcelona, ​​confirmed this reality, congregating a remarkable audience on Thursday, April 11.

A Multifaceted Face

This book offers a diverse and rich vision of the life of Bishop Joan Carrera, from his first steps to his last days, all woven with a deeply religious spirit, committed to democratic values ​​and rooted in the love of culture and Catalan language.

With contributions from around fifty people, the book immerses us in a world of memories and experiences, highlighting the fundamental role of Carrera in the media, especially in Catalunya Cristiana and Ràdio Estel.

A Heartfelt Tribute

The presentation of the book was the perfect occasion to pay tribute to Bishop Joan, with emotional interventions by prominent journalists and personalities, who recalled his fight for the truth and his passion for an autonomous Catalan Church.

Jordi Breu, president of the Bishop Joan Carrera Memorial, emphasized the importance of keeping the bishop’s legacy alive, placing special emphasis on the personal experiences shared with him.

A Motto That Lasts

The title of the book, Look at the lemon trees in the forest, refers to Joan Carrera’s episcopal motto: ‘Look at the lemon trees in the forest as they grow’ (Mt 6:28), a metaphor for his unwavering faith.

An Undying Record

During the colloquium, memories and anecdotes were shared, highlighting Carrera’s contribution to the anti-Franco struggle, his commitment to culture and his tireless defense of Christian values.

Antoni Bassas highlighted Carrera’s integrity and freedom of thought, stating that he ‘did very little racing’ in reference to his consistency until the end.

The bishop’s passion for the truth and his involvement in the creation of a Catalan ecclesiastical identity were other topics highlighted during the meeting.

A Legacy That Teaches

The closing of the event was carried out by the current auxiliary bishop of Barcelona, ​​David Abadías, who emphasized the importance of preserving and transmitting Carrera’s legacy to future generations of seminarians.

With the notable presence of Archbishop Joan Enric Vives and the former president of the Generalitat Jordi Pujol, the importance of Carrera’s legacy in Catalan history and identity was highlighted.

The event concluded with the reading of Carrera’s favorite psalm, reminding us of his humility and his devotion to the Gospel.
