A new four-legged friend

At the Sant Josep Oriol Priestly Residence in Barcelona, a young Breton spaniel named Truc has captured the hearts of its 63 residents. At just one year old, his reddish-brown coat and dynamic personality have made this dog an essential element of the community.

An emotional change agent

Truc is not just a pet; he is a true therapist. The director of the center, Monsignor Nino Rodríguez, highlights how his presence brings a daily dose of happiness and emotional support to the older priests. ‘Truc is obedient and always by the priests’ side. His company is invaluable,’ he says.

Benefits beyond joy

The positive influence of the presence of a dog in a residential environment is well known. It improves mood, encourages social interactions and can have a significant impact on memory and cognitive therapy. It also creates a calmer and more welcoming environment for all residents.

A special selection process

After assessing the benefits of a therapy dog, Mn. Nino asked Mn. Lluís Portabella to find a dog that could integrate into the life of the center. With a passion for pets, Mn. Portabella accepted the challenge and managed to get Truc, originally from Ècija, Andalusia, to join the residence.

A routine full of friendship

Truc has quickly adopted his new life, exploring every corner of the residence and connecting with the residents. Anna Montserrat, the care director, recounts how the dog accompanies the elderly during physiotherapy sessions and even on their daily walks.

Moments of calm and reflection

The dog also participates in moments of prayer, demonstrating a surprising ability to remain calm during religious ceremonies. Monsignor Lluís humorously shares that he sometimes has to convince Truc to enter the chapel, with his funny phrase: ‘come on, don’t be an atheist’.

A legacy of community and well-being

The addition of Truc has transformed the dynamics of the residence, fostering a stronger community atmosphere and general well-being. The center’s managers are convinced that his presence not only improves the quality of life of the residents, but also strengthens the bonds between them.

With the intention of continuing to enjoy his company, the members of the residence have found Truc not just a dog, but a true family member who brings love and support to their daily lives.
