Recently, Santa Caterina Hospital has received a significant donation of 20,201 euros from the Oncolliga Girona Foundation, the result of the collection of the Oncotrail 2024 solidarity race. These funds are intended to improve the patients’ conditions in the palliative care unit, with the aim of providing a more comfortable and cozy environment.

The amount obtained has allowed the acquisition of essential material, including a wheelchair that will facilitate patients with reduced mobility to leave their rooms and enjoy the outside. A armchair designed for overweight and a portable ultrasound has also been incorporated, which will improve clinical care and diagnosis efficiency.

The Santa Caterina Hospital’s palliative care unit offers specialized care for patients in advanced stages of complex diseases, with an approach to quality of life and emotional support for both the patients and their families.
Statistics that speak
With a capacity for 20 beds, this unit serves about 400 patients a year, with an average stay of 13 days. Most income (80%) correspond to oncological patients, while 20% are affected by other serious conditions such as respiratory or neurodegenerative diseases.

Recently, Paqui Badosa, President of the Oncolliga Girona Foundation, together with Lluís Comet, director of Oncotrail, visited the palliative care unit to observe the new acquired material. They were accompanied by hospital professionals, including the medical director and palliative care chief, who emphasized the importance of this donation.

Oncotrail: more than a race
Oncotrail is not just a sporting event; It is a commitment to the solidarity cause. It consists of a race for teams of 100 km through the landscapes of the Costa Brava and the Gavarres, with a minimum registration of 1,000 euros per team. The funds raised are intended to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
A continuous success
Since its inception in 2013, Oncotrail has managed to raise more than 2.7 million euros. In the last edition, 396,772 euros were obtained, with a significant part for Girona hospitals to improve the comfort of patients with cancer.
