by PREMIUM.CAT

A Future of Expansion

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is preparing to embark on a journey of transformation, with plans to expand its infrastructure and increase its capacity dramatically. With a planned investment of more than €600 million, the airport is set to become an even more vibrant connectivity hub.

Capacity to Grow

Currently, the airport serves about 16 million passengers a year, but with the planned expansion, its capacity will increase to 26 million. This represents enormous growth potential, which will allow the airport to serve an increasing number of travelers and connect Alicante with more destinations.

Cutting-edge infrastructure

The airport expansion will include a new terminal, additional lines and greater operational capacity. These improvements will allow the airport to handle a greater number of flights and offer a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers.

A Balanced Approach

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has taken a balanced approach in addressing the issue of a second runway. While they recognize the need for growth, they also emphasize that airlines do not currently consider a second runway to be essential.

A Decision Based on Data

The Airport Regulation Document (DORA) serves as a regulatory framework for decision-making at airports. This document provides a rigorous, data-driven approach, ensuring that infrastructure investments are made rationally and responsibly.

Improved Connectivity

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is committed to improving Alicante’s connectivity with the airport. The Torrellano Bypass, a priority for the ministry, will provide a faster and more efficient link between the city and the airport.

Electrification on the Horizon

The ministry is exploring options for temporary electrification of railway tracks, which would reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. However, alternatives are being considered to avoid any disruption to rail service.

A Shared Vision

The event was attended by senior government officials, including the mayor of Alicante and the president of the Valencian Business Confederation (CEV). This meeting underlines the shared commitment of all stakeholders to ensure a bright future for Alicante Airport.
