A Different Mobilization
The CGT and CNT unions have organized an alternative demonstration to the one called by other major union centers in Palma. This mobilization brought together more than 300 people and followed a route that passed through Avingudes, Carrer Sindicat, Carrer Colon, Plaça de Cort, Plaça de la Reina to s’Hort del Rei. During the route, the demonstrators expressed slogans such as “people without houses and houses without people”, “tourists out of our neighborhoods” and “for class and combative feminism”.
Key Claims
David Fernández, member of the trade union section of the CNT in the Balearic Islands, explained that the May Day demonstration aimed to show the rejection of the “occupation of Palestine”, to denounce the “deterioration” of the public system of pensions and claim a “salary increase”. In addition, the aim was to highlight the “lack of employment stability”, highlighting that despite the increase in recruitment, many jobs offer only 20 hours a week or less, which makes it difficult to access a home
Extended Participation
The Esquerra Independentista de Mallorca blog has also joined the demonstration, which had already held a presentation event for the Coordinadora Obrera Sindical in Manacor. This has contributed to a diverse and expanded participation in this alternative union call.
