The Gothya: space of creation and reflection
The Ilerdencs Institute of Studies has become the ideal framework for hosting ‘Drive’, an exhibition that opens last Thursday and will remain open until July 20. The La Gothya Room, with its unique atmosphere, has witnessed the entrance of the artist Kirra Kusy, who was attended by the director of the IEI, Andreu Vázquez, during the inaugural act.
IEI-EMBARRAT 2024 Award: A recognition of innovation
Kirra Kusy, an American artist now resident of Catalonia, has recently received the prestigious IEI-Embarrat 2024 prize for his proposal ‘L’Escala’. In response to this recognition, he has created ‘Drive’, a work that addresses contemporary topics such as sustainability and transformation, reflecting his commitment to art as a tool for change.
Art and Sustainability: a sculptural car as a metaphor
One of the central pieces of the exhibition is a sculptural car, a fascinating creation built with objects found in the city and memories of a self -esteem trip through Spain. This vehicle, more than a simple object, symbolizes the movement and the interconnection between the past and the present, as well as the idea of artistic recycling.
Mural works: Textile stories in dialogue
In addition to the car, the exhibition includes five textile murals, made from recovered materials. These works not only beautify the space, but also narrate stories of displacement and collection, reflecting Kusy’s philosophy over the revitalization of materials and their recontextualization.
Kirra Kusy’s creative journey
Originally from Colorado and now established in Barcelona, Kirra Kusy is known for its ability to merge various artistic means. His work explores the relationship between the individual and his environment, as well as the personal history that each object can contain. Through repair and reuse techniques, Kusy transforms materials with a previous life into new visual narratives.
A future full of possibilities
The IEI-Embarrat prize not only recognizes Kusy’s talent, but also opens the door to new opportunities in the world of contemporary art. With an endowment of 1,000 euros, its exposure to Gótika is part of the contemporary creation-festival, which has left a significant imprint on local culture and is expected to continue to inspire future generations of artists.
