Remembering a brave act in difficult times
On April 6, 1925, as part of an oppressive dictatorship, Mossèn Bartomeu Barceló Tortella spoke a sermon that challenged the authorities and brought him to exile. Today, a century later, the city of Girona has decided to pay tribute to this prominent Catalan poet, who had to find refuge in Perpignan after his arrest.
The commemoration of the stairs of the cathedral
The tribute ceremony, organized by members of the civil society of Felanitx, its homeland, and of Girona, took place on the steps of the cathedral, gathering a large group of authorities, both civil and religious, as well as relatives of the priest.
A journey through the life of Barceló
The ceremony was led by Jaume Piquer, who gave the word to the writer Bartomeu Mestre. The latter offered a deep look at Barceló’s life and work, with references to his article ‘All the itineraries of a Catalan in Mallorca’, which details his career.
Family bond and exciting witnesses
The Vice -Caldessa of Girona, Gemma Geis, shared memories of his Besoncle, Mossèn Camil Geis, who witnessed the Sermon of Barceló and recorded at this moment in several writings. The testimonies of family and friends who traveled from Felanitx contributed an emotional dimension to the tribute.
The influence of friendship
Professor Joan Mir spoke of his bond with Mossèn Barceló, while the brothers Joan and Maria Maimó recalled his father’s friendship with the priest, reading a poem that the latter had dedicated to his family. In addition, Jaume Deloncle, son of a friend of Barceló, shared memories of his relationship during the Mossèn’s stay in Roussillon.
Supports and accessions to tribute
During the event, several significant accessions were mentioned, including that of the Barceló biographer, Joan Roig, the current Ulldemolins priest, and messages of support from political figures such as the presidents of Catalonia, Jordi Pujol and Quim Torra, as well as other personalities who have recognized the importance of their figure.
A dance that celebrates cultural freedom
The day was closed with a tribute dance, by L’Oleteny Álvar Borrell, accompanied by Gemma Pla in the flabiol. Jaume Piquer emphasized that this dance was a tribute to Mossèn Barceló and to all those who have fought throughout history for a more cultured and free Catalonia.
