A Unique Theatrical Experience

Last Sunday, April 7, the congregants who attended the religious ceremony of Baixada de la Cinta, witnessed an unprecedented event. In a determined initiative, the Royal Archconfraternity of the Ribbon offered the faithful a renewed experience of the traditional celebration. On this occasion, instead of the usual way of reciting and singing, the faithful were able to enjoy a theatrical performance of the ‘Retaule de la Baixada de la Cinta’.

The initiative had the collaboration of the actors of the Passion and the Living Nativity scene of Jesús de Tortosa, who brought life to this centuries-old story with their talent and dedication.

Positive Reaction of the Congregation

The novelty pleasantly surprised the attendees, who enthusiastically welcomed this innovative experience. Monsignor Paco Vives, canon and rector of the parish of Sant Francesc de Jesús, was one of the promoters of this initiative. According to him, the adaptation of the original text for the theatrical performance was a resounding success.

Vives emphasizes that, while maintaining fidelity to the original story, additional fragments were introduced to enrich the representation. The script, drawn up by Vives and revised by the Bishop of Tortosa, Sergi Gordo, brought this unique experience to life.

Continuity and Commitment

After the success of this first performance, both the members of the confraternity and Reverend Vives himself agree on the importance of keeping this initiative alive. With the aim of preserving and spreading the rich Christian history of Tortosa, dating back to 1178, it is planned to repeat this experience next year. Thus, we want to continue bringing the parishioners closer to this venerated tradition, which explains the handing over of the sacred belt of Our Lady of the Ribbon to a priest in Tortosa’s cathedral.
