Cross -border collaboration for the future

Andorra and Catalonia have joined forces in a new project called Tramvalira, an initiative that seeks to access European funds to develop a light tram that connects Sant Julià de Lòria with La Seu d’Urgell. This collaboration marks a historical moment, as it is the first time the Government of Andorra has led a project within a European program of cross -border cooperation.

Clear and sustainable goals

The main purpose of this project is to carry out feasibility studies for the tram connection, which will not only enhance sustainable mobility, but also facilitate the traffic of the more than 1,600 people who believe the border daily to work. Currently, many of these workers use private vehicles, contributing to the increase in traffic on roads such as the N-145 and CG-1 road, which can register up to 20,000 vehicles on rush days.

A commitment to mobility

David Forné, Secretary of State for Energy Transition, has expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, emphasizing the importance of continuing to explore mobility solutions that benefit both Andorra and the neighboring regions. The joint presentation of the project reflects the desire to improve the interconnection and quality of life of the citizens of both territories.

A Context of Positive Relations

The decision to submit this candidacy came shortly after a meeting between Forné and Sílvia Paneque, counselor of the Generalitat de Catalunya, where the proposal of the tram that is being considered nationwide was discussed. The positive assessment of the Generalitat has been a key factor in supporting the presentation of the project.

Futuristic challenges and perspectives

Although Andorra cannot receive direct funding from cooperation programs, their participation is possible through studies and hired works that are already being implemented. In addition, the possibility of a future association agreement with the European Union could open new ways of funding. Once the documentation has been submitted, the Poctefa program management authority will be responsible for reviewing the proposal, hoping that the decision will be made public in the fall.

The Poctefa program and its importance

The POCTEFA is a European program that seeks to fund projects that promote environmental and climate actions in border territories. Andorra, despite being new in project leadership, has been actively involved in 45 initiatives between 2014 and 2020, demonstrating its commitment to cross -border cooperation.

An opportunity for innovation

With the Tramvalira, Andorra and Catalonia project not only seek to improve mobility, but also to establish a sustainable development model that can inspire other regions. The integration of the two entities in this project is a clear example of how collaboration can generate innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.
