Solid International Support
The Government of Andorra has received broad political support in its search for an association agreement with the European Union. This has been confirmed by Xavier Espot from New York, where he has been participating in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations. This week, Espot and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Imma Tor, held talks with several States to consolidate this support.
Technical Analysis Phase
Currently, the final text of the agreement is in a phase of technical analysis. Espot has highlighted that, despite the technical recommendations, the decisions taken will essentially be political. ‘The political nuance will determine the way forward’, he said, making clear the importance of a consensual approach.
Crucial Dialogues in New York
In addition to meetings with world leaders, Espot will meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin to discuss issues such as the decriminalization of abortion. The head of government has stressed the need to make progress on this issue during the current legislature, highlighting the importance of a broad consensus in the drafting of a legal text.
Commitment to Peace and Sustainability
During his intervention at the general assembly, Espot will raise the need to stop armed conflicts and promote multilateralism as a solution for global peace. In addition, it will highlight Andorra’s efforts in the fight against climate change and its digital transformation, presenting the Principality as an example to follow.
Strategic Bilateral Meetings
As part of its activities, Espot has held meetings with several leaders, including the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro. Both discussed the strong presence of the Portuguese community in Andorra and celebrated the return of the Portuguese consulate, which will improve services for Portuguese citizens in the Principality.
Interest in the Association with the EU
Montenegro has expressed interest in the process of Andorra’s integration into the European Union, seeing the association agreement as a key opportunity for the country’s development.
Cooperation with Kosovo
Xavier Espot also held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to discuss common challenges and opportunities for bilateral and multilateral cooperation between both countries.
A Promising Future
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Imma Tor, has highlighted the importance of communication between Andorra and Kyrgyzstan in the face of climate change. With the next Ibero-American Summit on the horizon, Andorra is committed to continuing to collaborate with other nations to face global challenges, reaffirming its commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
