A Promising Start in Baku
David Forné, Secretary of State for Energy Transition, has launched his agenda at COP29, which is taking place in the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. This international conference brings together nations with a common goal: to move towards a concrete commitment to deal with climate change, following the guidelines of the Paris Agreement.
An International Recognition
During his first intervention, Forné took part in the ‘Global Climate Transparency’ round table, a debate space promoted by countries such as Japan, the United States and Italy. A highlight was the receipt of a certificate that accredits Andorra as the first country to present the Biannual Transparency Report to the United Nations, a significant step in its contribution to global sustainability.
The Biannual Transparency Report: A Model to Follow
This report, delivered in October 2023, provides a complete overview of Andorra’s greenhouse gas emissions and the strategies implemented to reduce them. Forné emphasized that this recognition by the UN symbolizes the approval of the international community towards Andorra’s efforts in the fight against climate change.
The Importance of Transparency
Forné stressed that transparency is essential to foster global collaboration and to ensure that climate action is effective. In addition, he pointed out that clear communication allows Andorra to demand responsibility from other states with significant potential to reduce emissions.
Learnings for Future Commitments
In his speech, the Secretary of State explained that the validation process of the report has improved the way Andorra collects and presents its information. This experience can become a source of inspiration for other countries that have not yet presented their reports, highlighting the need for collective action to mitigate the effects of climate change, especially in mountain regions like Andorra.
International Collaboration in Action
At the same time, Andorra participated in the presentation of the technical review of Guyana’s BTR, which followed in the footsteps of the Principality in the presentation of this crucial report. The Andorran delegation also met with other French-speaking countries to coordinate strategies and promote climate cooperation, an important step in creating a support network between nations.
Looking Towards the Future
With COP29 as a platform, Andorra reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and transparency. Their experience can inspire other countries to adopt similar measures, and is a reminder that global collaboration is essential to meet the challenges presented by climate change. The road is long, but every step counts in the fight for a more sustainable future.
