A Journey in Time through Art
Recently, an unexpected discovery has brought to light a set of illustrations by Salvador Dalí, which had been forgotten in a London garage for five decades. These lithographs, which were once part of a limited edition, are now set to be auctioned, offering collectors a unique opportunity to own a piece of Surrealist legacy.
The Relationship of Phaedra and Theseus: A Reflection of Tragedy
Among the illustrations discovered, a work that represents the princess Phaedra, a mythical character from Greek mythology, stands out. The image captures the essence of her emotional conflict, reflecting her relationship with Theseus, her husband, with an air of discontent. Phaedra’s story, which ends in tragedy, is a reminder of the complexities of love and desire.
The Context of Creation
This illustration is part of a series created by Dalí during the seventies, intended to illustrate Ovid’s ‘The Art of Love’. This classic text, which teaches strategies of seduction, becomes an ideal vehicle for the painter’s artistic expression, fusing his imagination with timeless themes.
The Unexpected Find
The scene of this discovery was a garage in Mayfair, where ten lithographs by Dalí were found, as well as other works by the French artist Théo Tobiasse. Chris Kirkham, associate director of auction house Hansons, said he was surprised to discover these hidden gems during a visit to value antiques.
A Forgotten Past
According to Kirkham, the lithographs had been kept unframed since their purchase in a London gallery. The owner, now preparing for a new chapter abroad, has decided it’s time to let these works see the light of day once more.
Auction Expectations
Dalí’s lithographs are estimated to sell for between £300 and £500, while Tobiasse’s could fetch between £100 and £300. Together, the collection could fetch a total of £5,000, attracting the attention of collectors looking for signed and original pieces.
An Active Market
Kirkham points out that both Dalí and Tobiasse are highly sought-after artists, and their works always generate interest. This auction represents an opportunity for those who wish to acquire a signed print in an accessible manner.
Reflections on Art and Memory
The rediscovery of these lithographs not only illustrates the importance of preserving art, but also reminds us that often the best gems are hidden in plain sight. The story of Phaedra and Theseus, captured through Dalí’s gaze, continues to resonate in the present, testifying to the eternal power of art to capture human emotions and stories.
