A new stage in the construction of the temple
The Board of Trustees of the Construction Board of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia has begun an exciting selection process for the creation of the Gloria facade. At a meeting held on March 24, three renowned artists, Miquel Barceló, Cristina Iglesias and Javier Marín, was commissioned, the design of an artistic proposal that will mark a new chapter in the history of this emblematic monument.
A facade of deep meaning
The facade of glory, considered the most significant of the temple, represents a synthesis of Gaudí’s work. Esteve Camps, chairman-delegate of the board, emphasized the importance of having a minimum of three sculptors, as mentioned in a previous interview. This responds to Gaudí’s vision, who designed this facade with three levels that reflect the earthly, spiritual and heavenly fields.
The progress in the works
The works of the Sagrada Familia advance in a planned manner. In the presentation of the memory of 2024, the temple officials confirmed that work is being done at the end of the Tower of Jesus Christ, which has reached the twelfth level of panels, and in the installation of the cross terminal. In addition, the Assumpta Chapel continues to keep up.
Preparations for the Glory Facade
In relation to the façade of glory, work has already begun to lift the four towers that will characterize it. The goal for 2025 is to have completed the eight columns that will support these structures. Currently, an iron porch is being installed on Mallorca Street to facilitate pedestrian crossing and prepare the ground for scaffolding.
The story that will tell the facade
The façade of glory, oriented towards the sea, will tell the history of humanity from its origins with Adam and Eve to the Last Judgment, as well as the teachings of Jesus who guide eternal happiness. This project has been worked carefully and in detail, with the advice of a theological commission created by Cardinal Joan Josep Omella in 2016.
Academic contributions to the project
In February 2020, a month before confinement, a group of experts presented a thorough report to the Board of Trustees, which included a theological and interpretative analysis of the project designed by Antoni Gaudí. This document, eighty-nine pages, was prepared by Armand Puig, Francesc Torralba and Joan Torra, who took over after the death of Father Joan Galtés.
A future full of promises
With this new project, the Sagrada Familia continues to be a symbol of creativity and spirituality, promising a future where art and faith merge uniquely. The hope is that artistic proposals provide a new dimension on the façade of glory, making it a testimony to the passage of time and human beliefs.
