French Police Neutralize Attempted Attack on Synagogue in Rouen

In the city of Rouen, in northern France, French police have thwarted an attempted attack on a synagogue, neutralizing an individual who intended to set fire to the building. According to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, the man was ‘neutralized’ by the police this Friday morning. The alleged attacker, armed with a knife, also confronted the police, and was killed by them. The ministry has confirmed that the man died as a result of police shooting.

Incident Details and Reactions

According to local sources, the individual had expressed his intention to set fire to the synagogue and had attacked an officer with a knife. The police intervention occurred after receiving a report of smoke near the building. The mayor of the city, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, confirmed that there were no more victims and that the fire outbreak was controlled by the Fire Department. He expressed his support for Rouen’s Jewish community and lamented the impact of the attack on the local population, who are ‘in shock’.

Security Concerns in France

This incident adds to security concerns in France, as two officers were recently killed in an attack on a police van to free a detainee. The incident took place at a motorway tollbooth near the town of Evreux, northwest of Paris. Four armed men assaulted the convoy, resulting in the death of two officers and leaving three injured, two of them in critical condition. Both the inmate and the assailants managed to flee, and so far the police have not been able to find them.
