A difficult initial objective

Since the beginning of the transfer market, Barça had set its sights on the Colombian Luís Díaz. The recommendation came from Hans-Dieter Flick, who saw in Díaz fundamental potential to become a star in the Barça project and complete a spectacular offensive trident. With this in mind, Deco took it upon himself to begin negotiations with Liverpool, knowing that it would not be an easy task.

Diaz’s desire and the economic reality

The 27-year-old footballer had expressed his interest in moving to the Camp Nou and leaving the Premier League behind, since he was not totally convinced by the new project of Arne Slot, successor to Jürgen Klopp. However, talks stopped when Joan Laporta decided to rule out the signing of the Colombian international, who had recently helped his team reach the Copa América final, losing to Argentina.

Nico Williams takes the lead

The Barça board finally opted for Nico Williams to reinforce the left wing of the attack. The lack of budget makes it practically impossible to add another world star at this time, unless some significant sales are made. Currently there are no advanced negotiations for the departure of any important player, which further distances the option of Díaz, former Porto player and Junior from Barranquilla.

The end of negotiations with Liverpool

Liverpool have been notified of Barça’s decision and there will be no further attempts to sign Díaz. Deco, who was in charge of the negotiations, withdrew after learning of the high financial demands of the English club. The Reds were not willing to accept less than 70 million euros for the South American striker, a figure very far from Barça’s budget.

Williams, guaranteed signing

With the arrival of Nico Williams practically guaranteed, Flick is also satisfied and assumes that he will not have Díaz in his squad. Nico’s outstanding performances during the Euro Cup have been crucial in tipping the balance in his favor. In addition to being noticeably younger – five years apart – Nico is a more economically viable option.

Closing of the operation

Nico’s signing will be closed for 58 million euros, the amount established in his termination clause. This figure is considerably lower compared to Liverpool’s request, which reaffirms Barça’s choice of Williams as its new bet for the future.
