The Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell, in collaboration with Aigües de Barcelona, is preparing for its 72nd edition, which will take place from April 12 to 20. Not only is this tournament a top -notch sporting event, but it is also distinguished by its committed environmental management, establishing a precedent in sustainability in the world of tennis.
Innovative environmental initiatives
Aigües de Barcelona has designed a series of measures to minimize the ecological impact of the tournament. Highlights will be installed fourteen sources of drinking water at various points of the event, and reusable bottles will be distributed to reduce waste generated during the competition.
Emission reduction measures
In addition, the company will keep track of the carbon and water footprint, with the aim of continuing the Sustainability Plan started in previous editions. For every thousand liters of tap water used, 44 kilos of waste will be saved and 453 kilos of CO2 emissions will be reduced.
Play for the Planet: Education and Awareness
During the tournament, the ‘Play for the Planet’ conference will be organized, open to the public, where experts will discuss the importance of sustainability in major sporting events. This initiative seeks to raise awareness of the need to adopt environmentally friendly practices in sport.

Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell has become a model to follow in sustainable management. This tournament is a pioneer as an outdoor event without smoke, with practices such as water reuse, reduction in plastics use and recycling promotion.
Recognitions and certifications
In recognition of these efforts, the tournament obtained the ISO 20121 certificate for its sustainable event management, as well as the Barcelona Biosphere distinction for its contribution to tourist sustainability.
