A new success in citizen participation

Barcelona has experienced an enriching experience with the selection of 76 initiatives in its participatory budgets, thanks to the massive vote that took place between May 12 and 17. These proposals have been the most voted by the citizens, including three projects created by children who have actively participated in the process.

A record number of participants

A total of 48,796 citizens have exercised their right to vote, accumulating 211,812 votes in total. The Decidim.barcelona platform, which facilitates participation, has received 164,000 unique visits during this decisive phase.

Comparative with previous editions

Participation has grown exponentially compared to the previous edition, with a remarkable attendance that has exceeded 90,000 people. In the final vote, the numbers speak for themselves: in 2021 39,433 people participated, while by 2025 they reached 48,796.

The voice of the children

One of the most innovative aspects of this edition has been the inclusion of children’s participation, which has allowed three projects presented by children between 8 and 13 years old. The chosen initiatives include the transformation of the Barcelona school yard and the improvement of the environment of various schools.

Projects selected by the youngest

The projects chosen are as follows: the transformation of the playground of the Barcelona School (Les Corts), the improvement of the environment of 10 educational centers in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and the renovation of the courtyard of the Ferran i Clua school (Sant Andreu).

Unprecedented citizen mobilization

The involvement of the citizenry has been exemplary, with a great diversity of entities that have promoted projects, including neighborhood associations and youth groups. Dissemination through social networks, posters and messages in WhatsApp groups has been key to motivating participation.

The projects selection process

Of the 1,733 initial proposals, 789 exceeded technical validation and 239 were presented to vote, resulting in the 76 projects chosen by the citizenry.

The way in advance

From now on, the process will continue with the formation of monitoring commissions that will ensure the execution of projects in each district. Also, the promoters of the winning projects will be called to actively participate in the design and monitoring of initiatives.

A constantly evolving participatory process

The second edition of the participatory budgets of Barcelona, started in October, has shown the effectiveness of a model that seeks to integrate the voices of all sectors of society. Debate and active participation sessions have been essential to building a more inclusive and participatory future.
