UAB and UB students unite in protest
A group of students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) have interrupted access to the university campus in a show of solidarity with Palestine. The protest arises in response to Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip. According to the Union of Students of Catalan Countries (SEPC), around eighty people have spent the night camping in the Plaça Cívica on campus and have blocked access to the trains with tables and chairs. The students demand an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people and seek to break the complicity of the educational community with Israel. Furthermore, they seek to weave the international solidarity of the Catalan Countries with Palestine. The main demonstration is scheduled for this Wednesday at noon in Barcelona.
Protests at the University of Barcelona
Students from the University of Barcelona (UB) have also joined the protest. They have camped in the historic building of the study center on Gran Vía and have blocked at least one of the side entrances with garbage containers. The students demand that all relations with the state of Israel be broken and call for a break with normality until this happens. The protest coincides with the 76th anniversary of the Naqba, a significant event for the Palestinian people.
Global student movement
The protests in Catalan universities join a global student movement in solidarity with Palestine. Students from around the world have expressed their rejection of their countries’ traditional support for the State of Israel. At universities such as Columbia, camps have taken place and arrests have been made by the authorities. The protests have also spread to other universities in the United States, France, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland and Germany.
