An unstoppable growth in the digital health sector
Catalonia is experiencing a stage of remarkable growth in the field of digital health. A recent study by ACCIÓ, in collaboration with various organizations in the sector, reveals that there are currently 386 operating companies in the region, which is an increase of 16.6% compared to the previous year.
The youth and potential of companies
Most of these companies are small and medium -sized, and surprisingly, almost two -thirds are relatively new, with less than ten years. The total business volume reached 633 million euros in 2023, with an increase of 6.9%. In addition, the sector has generated more than 5,300 jobs, 10.2% more than the previous year.
The opinion of the experts
Jaume Baró, General Director of Action, emphasizes that the current challenge is to foster the growth of these companies and attract more private investment. He hopes that ‘the capacity for growth in the sector is remarkable’.
Innovation as a fundamental pillar
One of the most important aspects in this industry is its firm commitment to innovation. About 42% of companies are integrating artificial intelligence into their solutions, covering fields such as medical diagnosis, digital therapies and clinical decision -making. Significant initiatives are also observed in immersive technologies and medical robotics.
Catalonia as a Global Referent
In the last five years, Catalonia has emerged as the Second Region in Digital Health Investments, only surpassed by Massachusetts. The total number of accumulated investments exceeds 1.5 billion euros, including emblematic projects such as the Astrazeneca Global R&D center in Barcelona, which plans to invest 1.3 billion and create up to 1.500 jobs.
Presence of multinationals
In addition, eight of the ten most influential companies in the digital health sector have a presence in Catalonia, including names such as Bayer, Johnson & Johnson and Cisco.
Challenges on the way
Despite this dynamism, the sector has yet to face several challenges. The study indicates the need to expand the network of technological suppliers, improve specialized training and ensure interoperability among healthcare systems. In addition, the lack of technical talent and local investment could be obstacles if they are not managed properly.
A promising future
The potential of the Catalan ecosystem is immense. With a avant -garde hospital infrastructure, a very active startup fabric and high quality search, Catalonia positions itself as a key player globally. Currently, 15.5% of companies export their solutions, and 13% are subsidiaries of international companies, thus reinforcing their global dimension.
