Catalonia and her debt: an alternative view of tax injustice

by PREMIUM.CAT
The realization of the Catalan debt: an illusion?

The idea that Catalonia has obtained a forgiveness of its debt is a wrong perception. In fact, the fiscal deficit we support with Spain is one of the highest in the autonomous communities, with an average approaching 375 million euros over the last decades. This means that, far from being forgiven, we should receive compensation that rises to about 80,000 euros per inhabitant.

The hidden cost of the condition

Although we do not have to deal with the interests of the debt of 18,000 euros, the true burden falls on us, since our taxes will be used to cover the debts of the other autonomies. This generates inequality that perpetuates the fiscal deficit, where Catalonia, with 20% of the sound, is in an unfavorable position compared to other regions such as the Canary Islands or Andalusia.

Services and needs: an unfavorable balance

Catalonia offers essential services that other autonomies do not have, such as the Mossos d’Esquadra or a robust judicial system. This constant need for higher funding makes our debt higher than that of other communities. With current budgets, it is impossible to meet basic needs such as hospitals or courts, and this forces us to look for resources that often do not come.

The impact of the fiscal deficit on Catalan society

The annual loss of millions of euros sent to Madrid without receiving proper compensation is a topic that directly affects the prosperity of Catalonia. Without a fair funding system, our region is deprived of the investments needed for its development, and promises of improvement are often oblivious.

The political scenario: a game of power

The Spanish government, under the mandate of the PSOE, promises resources in autonomies, but these promises seem to be just an attempt to maintain power. The reality is that the conditions offered seem to be more benefits for communities with less debt, such as Madrid, than for Catalonia, which is still abused.

An uncertain future for Catalonia

The tensions between Catalonia and the rest of Spain continue. The discourse of discrediting to our community is maintained, while the essential resources for our development are inaccessible. The need to recognize and deal with these inequalities is urgent, as Catalonia deserves to be treated with the corresponding dignity.

Final reflections

The current situation is not only a matter of numbers, it affects the lives of millions of Catalans. Lack of recognition and proper resources can have significant consequences for the future of Catalonia. It’s time to rethink the funding model and look for solutions that allow Catalonia to prosper as it deserves.
