The Value of Volunteering in Today’s Society

Every December 5, the world pauses to pay tribute to the volunteers who, with their effort and dedication, contribute to making the planet a better place. On this occasion, Manos Unidas highlights the contribution of some 6,500 people to its cause in Spain, who have been essential to the organization for more than sixty years.

A History of Commitment and Transformation

Cecilia Pilar, president of Mans Unides, explains that her experience as a volunteer has been fundamental in understanding the importance of this collective commitment. ‘Without the selfless support of each volunteer, our mission against hunger and inequality would not be viable’, he says.

A Journey of Thousands of Lives

The path of volunteering has evolved significantly. What began as a small group of women with a vision has grown to include 72 delegations across Spain, impacting more than 1.2 million people in continents such as America, Africa and Asia.

Life-Changing Experiences

An inspiring example is that of Olivia Herbosch, who left a promising career in a luxury company to volunteer with Mans Unides. ‘My personal restlessness led me to seek a deeper meaning in my life,’ he shares. ‘My travels have opened my eyes to the power of development and education’.

Real Impact in Vulnerable Communities

Olivia fondly recalls the projects that have helped child slaves leave precarious working conditions to access education. ‘What we do really makes a difference in people’s lives,’ she concludes.

Promoting Volunteerism among New Generations

Manos Unidas recognizes that the future of volunteering depends on its ability to connect with young people. Cecilia Pilar highlights that there are currently more than 200 young people involved in the organization, and encourages the youngest to participate in solidarity actions. ‘Their energy is crucial to building a fairer future,’ she says.

A Call to Action

On this International Volunteer Day, Manos Unidas calls on society to join this cause, highlighting the relevance of volunteering as a transformative tool in the fight against inequalities and the promotion of social justice.
